Bhutan National Dress for Men and Women

Gho, is the term that denotes the national dress of Bhutan for men and kira for women. Introduced during the 17th century by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyel, these dresses are popular among the locals and assign the Bhutanese a unique identity. Interestingly, it is mandatory for all the Bhutanese to wear the national dress on all the formal occasions, in government offices, and schools.

The Gho is a long robe, which stretches on to the knee and a kera is a woven cloth belt, which needs to be tightly held around the waist. This forms a large pouch, in which men carry traditional items like a bowl and betel nut. The kira is a floor-length rectangular piece of cloth, which gives women their deserving beauty.

It is wrapped around the body over a blouse called wonju, which makes it ever more beautiful. Gorgeous is the word that comes to mind when you witness Bhutanese women.
