A
Brief Introduction to Nepal
 |
Draped
along the greatest heights of the Himalaya, top of the world,
the Kingdom of Nepal is a land of eternal fascination, a place
where the ice-cold of the mountains meets the steamy heat
of the Indian plains. It is a land of ancient history, colorful
cultures and people, superb scenery and some of the best trekking
in the world.
Nepal's history is shaped by its geographical location, between
the fertile plains in the south and the desert-like plateau
of Tibet in the north. It is a landlocked country Located
between India and China has meant that Nepal has at times
played the role of intermediary - a canny trader between two
great powers - while at other times it has faced the threat
of invasion. Internally it has just a dynamic history, producing
the Himalaya's most sophisticated arts and cultures, centered
on the three great mini-kingdoms of the Kathmandu Valley -
Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur. Here in the winding alleys
and hidden courtyards scattered with temples and shrines,
traders and holy men conduct their affairs among the ancient
beauty and modern day squalor. The evocative power of these
surroundings enables one to mentally turn back to the medieval
era.
Behind
the time-worn palaces and temples of Kathmandu valley, above
and beyond the hills that ring the valley, rises the 'Abode
of Snows' the Himalaya, a natural kingdom and a magnet for
trekkers, mountaineers and adventure lovers from around the
world.
Whether you get your adrenaline kicks from some of the world's
premier trekking, white water rafting and mountain biking,
or from the sight of your first tiger or rhino through the
dawn mist atop an elephant in Chitwan National Park, Nepal
will leave countless impressions. Many visitors, drawn to
Nepal by the promise of adventure, leave equally bewitched
by the friendliness and openness of the Nepali people and
their rich and diverse culture.
Nepal is an amazingly diverse country that offers something
for everyone. One journey through this land is rarely enough.
The first thing many people do after a visit to Nepal is to
start planning the next visit.
